Tamara de Lempicka
(1898-1980)


Born to a wealthy family in Poland, Tamara de Lempicka received a well-rounded education as a result of her high class standing. She fled the Russian Revolution with her husband and moved to Paris where the avant-garde artists influenced her work, primarily Leger. She also had a deep admiration for Cezanne, and emulated his style in her female nudes. Lempicka was a successful portrait artist as well, painting the Parisian upper class in an idealized fashion. Her homosexuality was apparent in her female nude paintings that incorporated Cubism and geometric backgrounds
