Arriving in Bali in 1932, he later married Ni Pollok, a Balinese dancer who became his best known model. He donated his house in Sanur with all his remaining paintings to the Indonesian government (now the Le Mayeur Museum). His impressionistic paintings of Balinese daily life, and of the Balinese people, show an effective use of light and shadow.
